As required by the California Constitution, Governor Newsom proposed a budget for the state's 2020/2021 fiscal year in January.  Cal. Const. Art. IV, § 12.  As noted in this post, the Governor had big plans for the Department of Business Oversight, including a name change and a significant increase in staffing.   In mid May, the Governor submits what is known as the "May Revise".  This revision is intended to reflect updated information about state revenues and expenditures.  Yesterday, the Governor submitted the May Revise. 

In announcing the May Revise, the Governor acknowledged that California is facing "massive job losses and revenue shortfalls".  Nonetheless, he is proposing only a 0.99% cut in his proposed increase in the Department of Business Oversight's Budget.  He had previously proposed adding 53 new positions to the DBO.  He is now proposing to add 48 positions.  Overall, the DBO's budget in these extremely difficult financial times will increase by some 11% under the revised budget.

On this date in 1905, Las Vegas, Nevada was founded, not as a resort city, but as a railroad town.  The city was not incorporated until 1911, which ironically was a year after Nevada's 1909 law banning gambling took effect.  See Nevada Secretary Of State Orders Halt To Sports Wagering Program.
